Club Cross Country Nationals

Hello Spartans

We need to coordinate our entry for the Club Nationals quickly if we want to save money. The entry fee increases as shown:

Online entries received on or before 5:00 EST on 12/1 are $30
Online entries received after 12/1 and before 5:00 EST on 12/4 are $55
Entries after 12/4 must be made onsite (in San Francisco and paid with cash or check) before 5:00 PST on 12/8 and are $75 (what a pain)
Faxed and race day entries are not accepted

The procedure for entering online is fairly straightforward. All you need is your Pacific Association number and password. Here is the link http://www.usatf.org/events/2006/USATFClubXCChampionships/entry/ for entering. You don’t need to declare a team just yet. We have until 12/4 to sort that out. However, if you are not listed on the club roster, you need to take a few steps to be added so that you are eligible to run for the team. Here are the people listed on the club roster:

Bill Bengiveno
Greg Burke
Pat Buzbee
Brian Conroy
Leroy Daleen
Jay Elkerton
Lino Fabula
Kurt Gravenhorst
Sal Martinez
Rhoda Mirabeau
Jose Pina Sr
Jose Pina Jr
Steve Radigan
Art Sanchez
Claire Saxton
Paul Tjogas
Francisco Verduzco
Jerome Woehl
David Woodruff

Here is what you need to do to add yourself to the club roster (from PA website): Continue reading

Today is deadline for 2007 PA cards at reduced price

Today is deadline for 2007 PA cards at reduced price
The cost for a USATF membership (aka PA card) is increasing from $20 to $29.95 next year. You can buy next year’s PA card for this year’s price of $20 if you do it today and online. The price goes up to $29.95 tomorrow. This is a good deal for those who already have their 2006 PA cards.

However, if you don’t already have a PA card for 2006 and you plan on running the PA championships or club championships this year and running at PA races next year, then it is better to purchase a membership after tomorrow, since $29.95 will get you a PA card that is valid for this year and next year. Here is the link for purchasing cards online:

https://www.usatf.org/membership/application/index.asp

On a related topic, we had another scoring issue with race day registrations. In the past, club members bought their PA cards on the day of the race and got scored for it. We can no longer count on a PA rep being available on the day of the race. Approximately 90% of Pacific Association members buy their PA cards online. The PA encourages this for two reasons, 1) if everyone buys their cards online, they don’t have to have someone at the races signing people up and 2) online registration is seamlessly and quickly entered into the PA database and the score sheets for road racing and cross country. Applications for PA cards that are not submitted online have to be processed manually, this takes longer. In the meantime, a dummy membership number has to be created for the member so he/she can be scored. When the membership number finally comes in from the PA office, the records for the dummy membership number and membership number have to be merged for all the race results. Needless to say, it is a lot of extra work. The folks that are doing this work are volunteers and we should avoid causing them extra grief if possible.

On a second related topic, we need to assure that all our club members have Spartans (Club #154) listed as their club affiliation on their PA memberships. Most of us do. If you don’t, you are assumed to be unattached and can’t be scored for our team. We don’t want to wait until race day to declare our club affiliations. The PA association and its scorers take a dim view of this. Their position, since we turn in score sheets after the race, is How do we know that you didn’t pick out a fast unattached person at the race and add them to your team?’ So let’s get these resolved before the PA meet and Club championships. You can check as to whether you are listed on the club roster by going to the following link: http://www.usatf.org/assoc/Pacific/data/members.asp?page=adult Scroll down the list and find your name. You should have club # 154 next to your name. If not, you need to add it.

Happy Halloween to everyone. – Paul

Any of you been on TV recently?

Rich Santoro who laced up his running shoes for several years to run track intervals with the Spartans, has shelved his track shoes in a return to his dancing shoes.

Check his sister and him out this Sunday on NBC 11t 10:00 A.M. He was always fun at the track, this interview should not disappoint.

Last week’s race at Garen Park ended with these Spartans conquering the
hills of Hayward:

OPEN – 5 needed
Jose Pina – 36
Dave Woodruff -48
Jose Pina, jr – 9
Paul King – 26

SENIORS – 4 needed
Paul Togas – 53
Sal Martinez – 53
Art Sanchez – 53
Jerome Woehl – 61
SUPER SR – 3 needed
Greg Burke – 60
Bill Bengivino – 62
Leno Fabela – 64

WOMEN OPEN – 5 needed
Claire Saxton – 29
Rhoda Mirabeau – 52
Susan Hu – 43

It was good to see a couple new faces out there. One being a WOMAN! Rhoda Mirebeau joined the ladies, so now we are over half way to having a team. Since the age group would be that of the youngest member, we probably wouldn’t score too well, but, hey, we would be on the scoreboard. Claire continued her speedy ways, leading all but two of the Spartans. Only Jose Pina and David Wooldruff could best her.

Paul King was a new male runner. A young guy! Nice to see him out there. If we had had ONE more male to help that team of Jose Jr, Paul and the older guys filling down, we would have had an open team – that would be a first time ever event for as far back as I can remember.

We did field a mens’ seniors team, thanks to Art limping in on a sprained ankle. At least he didn’t get lost this time. But gee Art, spraining your ankle by picking up your shirt after practice. Now THAT is lame. Pat B raced a mountain lion last week. Would have caught him but sprained his ankle. Now THAT is a macho reason for not running. Filling the Seniors’ last spot was the last Spartan, me – I proved once again that a lot of bicycling doesn’t much help running. And again we had a Super Seniors team. they are in about third in the standings. Don’t ask how many teams are in that age group – the old guys probably could hear you ask, and if they did, they wouldn’t remember.

Elements to a successful appeal – by Paul

I think there are two elements to a successful appeal. The first element is just showing up. I think it is a lot harder for the PA committee to look someone in the eye and tell them no than it is to e-mail a rejection. The second thing is to keep answering questions.

Your protest was read and that set things up. After that, the committee had
questions. As long as you can keep answering questions, you are going to be all right.

Spartans win appeal for Empire Open

Thanks Paul!

For those of you that are first reading of this appeal, I’ll insert some background info. Our 50 years team drove all the way up to Santa Rosa about a month ago to run in the first cross country race of the season. They planned to register with the PAUSAT&F at the race but there was no one there to register new members. We entered the race anyway, planning to register later. Obviously, we were not scored because we were not PAUSAT&F members at race time. Our protest was that our lack of registration was because of the shortcoming of the organization, not the runners; we should not be penalized for their omissions.

I lodged a brief e-mail appeal, but expected it to be denied because we would not be represented at the meeting. Paul Tjogas volunteered to go to the meeting and present our case. Below are his comments and observations. He didn’t say anything about his presentation – it must have been good.

Personally, it is really cheering when Paul and others step up to help the Spartans. I appreciate the thank-yous for for the work that I do for the club. Getting help in these things are especially welcome. It energizes me when people help. Thank all of you, either for chipping in when money is needed, showing up for races, practices and socials and also doing these other orginizational things.

And thank-you Paul for presenting our appeal. I know you presented it with tact and grace, understanding that these people are doing their best to keep the series going without receiving any compensation and probably very little thanks. Your comments below give us a peek at the efforts they put in.

The next race is is a 5k on Sep 30 starting at 9:00 for the women & 9:45 for the men. It’s at Garin Rgnl Park in the hill of Hayward.

1/28/06 Spartan’s Banquet

Inquiring minds want to know – – –

Yes Kurt, there is a Spartans banquet!

It’s still on Saturday January 28th, 2006, from 6:30 P.M. until – – –

After seeing the incomparable Kurt Gravenhorst’s riveting performance on the small screen, staring in the NYC 2006 Times Square New Year celebration, the Spartans executive staff unanimously agreed with his celebrity recommendation to dine at – – –

Sonoma Chicken Coop, 200 E Campbell Ave, Campbell, CA
phone 408 866-2699.
For menu and other information, please go to their web site – sonomachickencoop.com

After dinner entertainment will be highlighted by a short presentation of our 2005 Spartan running achievements. That will be REALLY short, so we will quickly elect new officers and maybe prevail upon Kurt to give his interpretation of a million people watching the Times Square ball drop. Oh, the thrill of it all!

As always, Spartan friends and family are invited. Can’t wait to see you there. RSVP to me, Jerome Woehl either by e-mail or phone – 408 230-0689.

10/30/05 – China Camp Cross Country, San Rafael

Saturday, 7 A.M., October 30th, driving to the base of Mt Tamlpais and the morning sun. What’s this? Low clouds? Rain? Fog? A cold, wet, muddy, miserable race ahead. Oh well, at least it’s a new course and only 4.25 miles rather than 4.6. Wonder where it goes. No longer is there the nice flat mile loop through the tidelands. The web map make it look like it follows the hill countors, maybe less climbing. The dreaded switch backs no more???

Unbelievably, our Sacramento cheer squad, Teri, and I get there early. Must have been speeding. Gorden, a rival for years has backed his pickup into a ditch. Front wheel hanging in the air. Ugly situation. Hope he doesn’t miss the race. It’s cool and cloudy but relatively dry for the mile walk in to the start/finish area. The Spartans began showing up. We are short one man for the Super Seniors team. We will only have 4 not 5 races scored for the year, there goes doing well in the series. Nick notes that today we can fill down and at least score a Masters team. Won’t do well using guys 10 to 20 years older, but a team is a team. That’s cool.

There’s Gorden again, pushing two grand kids in a stroller looking unconcerned about the race. “Hi Gorden! Cute kids. Truck o.k.? Are you racing today?” “Yes and no. I quite.” “What do you mean quit? Just this race or forever” “Forever. I just decided to start walking. Same distances that I used to run.” That’s scary. He’s in his early 60’s. How many years do I have? Hi Frank! That’s the once super runner. Same age. He is trying to come back from a broken hip … and has a heart pacemaker. Oh, hi Bill. Same age. Knees are gone. Once an Olympic qualifier. And here I am, in my “long” practice runs, now reduced to only 3 or 4 miles, I struggle not to quit in the horrible first few minutes. Hi Darrel. He’s in his 70’s. Always out here. Ran for Utah State I think. Nearly last, but he’s still doing what he loves. There goes the ladies’ race. No Spartans. Looks like there are high school girls here from Santa Cruz. So young and alive. Gosh, they are from the COLLEGE … am I OLD?

Hi Barb. Our cheer squad is compleat! Steve says the course is pretty much the same as before, just the beginning and end are different. The clouds clear, it’s sunny and cool. Perfect weather. It’s been just enough rain to make perfect footing. Beautiful course, rolling hills and stately oaks. Oops, here’s the damn switch backs. Gosh, there’s Lino. Why is he behind me? Those weren’t so bad. Am I getting stronger on the hills!!! Or just so slow that they don’t have as much effect. I know I no longer have to slow for sharp turns; I am already going slow enough. A mile to go. Mostly flat and downhill. Love that! What’s this long grade doing here? The 4 mile marker should be just over the top. Well, maybe this turn. The next? I’m dying! There it is .. oh no another rise .. come on catch that guy … finished. Two 50’s guys and 33 seconds behind bionic Frank.

In the 40’s the Spartans were: Dave Woodruff, 47 – 27:51; Nick Butterfield, 47 – 31:18; Lino Fabela, 64 – 32:21; Kurt Gravenhorst, 55 – 35:40, and; Francisco Verduzco, 55 – 36:14. With fillers from the older divisions and only three out of five races to score, we are mired in last.

Our 50’s team was: Brian Conroy, 50 – 28:23; Salvador Martinez, 52 – 28:55; Paul Tjogas, 53 – 29:28; Steve Radigan, 54 – 30:12, and; Jerome Woehl, 60 – 32:15. On the web, something is wrong with the team scores, our last two races are not shown. With them, we are somewhere in first, second or third. Without, it’s fourth.

Here comes the men’s open race. Isn’t that picture perfect – framed by magnificent oaks, a column of young bucks, sweeping through the turn. Gee they look strong. Fast. Let’s walk to the cars. Wow, over there across the meadow the guys are surging up the trail, a mile to the finish. They look good. Still strong. Still smooth. And they are only the “mid-pack” runners.

10/01/05 – Cross Country at the Presidio, SF

In the 4.19 mile race in the sand and hills of the Presidio, the Spartans added lots of excitement at the front of the race. With less than five minutes until the race start, the last carload of Spartans finally drove up. Everyone else is already down at the start while the Spartans are doing race registration and nature calls. But with under a minute to go, even the Spartans are at the line. The starter raises the gun. All runners are tensed for the blast. Oh wait, lookie there, across the field, here comes a lone runner, dashing towards the mass of guys at the other side. He is going to get trampled! The gun goes off. Our very own Frank, veers to the side and circles in at the back of the field.

The Spartans 40’s team of David Woodruff – 25:03; Brian Conroy – 25:40 and Nick Butterfield – 28:12 were able to field a team for the second time in five races with help from 50’s runners Leroy Daleen – 32:56 and Francisco Verduzco – 33:38. They are ninth in the overall standings, hurt in part, by the paucity of runners.

The Spartans 50’s team, consisting of Salvador Martinez – 26:03, Paul Tjogas – 26:38, Art Sanchez – 27:37, Steve Radigan – 28:49 , placed third and are third in the standings.

The Spartans Super Seniors team, Bill Bengivino – 28:34, Leno Fabela – 29:06 and Frank James – 30:35, also placed third and are also third in the standings.

A cramped leg didn’t allow the writer to run. It was interesting to be on the outside looking in – I never have seen how fast some of the masters can run. Even guys as old or older than me. Some guys that I used to beat, ran times that I no longer believe are humanly possible. By watching from the center of the roughly figure eight, two lap course, much of the race could be seen. Here they come, charging down the hill on the way to loop back up to the big hill! The intensity at the front of the pack was incredible. Wild eyes, sweeping the uneven decent, frantically looking for the next turn, warily watching as runners pressed too closely together. Huffing and puffing, coughing and snorting like stampeding horses. It didn’t seem possible they would be able to run another lap at that intensity.

The fire subsided as the faces and backs that I generally see, trotted into view. These guys were obviously slower. They didn’t seem to be working as hard, but you could still see the effort and intensity in their faces. Apparently, many older runners no longer have bodies that allow them to train as long and hard as they once did, so racing performance suffers. Older, slower runners, simply do not have the muscle to sustain high intensity effort, so they do not need as much oxygen to fuel muscles working at lower levels.

The womens’ race was another exciting one. Our team, consisting of Susan Hu, Susan Hu, Susan Hu, Susan Hu and Susan Hu, was not scored because of a lack of name diversity. Some of you other ladies really should join in the fun. At the start, 43 year old Rosemarie Lagunas, a frequent overall woman’s winner, was twenty yards back, in about 6th place. She apparently was beginning to show her age. But around mile three on the long downhill, there she was, in second, only 20 yards behind 25 year old Kathleen Gosnell of Humboldt. Rosemarie was gaining ground. This was going to be exciting. Coming out of the woods with a half mile to go, Rosemarie was already 20 yards ahead, slowly opening the gap. As they ran the lap around the athletic field to the finish, rolls were reversed – Rosemarie, over 50 yards ahead, looked young and lithe with her long open stride and high knee lift. In comparison, Kathy was looking old and tired, plodding along without much spring in her steps. She still would have easily beaten many of the men.
