Yes,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y5 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">\u201cswarmed\u201d is the appropriate word as the Magnificent Seven (Art, Sal, Don, Lino,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y6 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Brian, Nick, and Kurt) gathered to form the largest SPARTAN XC team to lace<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y7 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">the shoes and kick the dirt since the days of Andrea and \u201chalf-inch spikes\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y8 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Charles sported the SPARTAN singlet. Just two years ago, only Art and Sal kept<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y9 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">the SPARTAN name on life support, journeying together to keep our teamless<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1ya pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Club name alive in Covid year of 2020. Gone are the PRs, the sub-<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1yf pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">seven mile pace, the mid-pack surge, and the 400-meter kick to the finish line.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y10 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">The discussion of tempo runs, repeat intervals, and hill training that once<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y11 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">controlled the carpool conversation has been replaced with complaints of<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y12 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">cramps, cortisone shots, and colonoscopies.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y12 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">But we\u2019re still here.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y12 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Be proud.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x4 pg-1h3 pg-1y13 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">The PA XC Championship is unlike all the other races. Once you arrive at<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y14 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">the race site, you realize there is a unmistakable energy, and you sense a<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y15 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">peculiar running vibe that lingers in the air as you carry your running bag to the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y16 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">registration tent and make camp among the hundreds of sleek harriers that<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y17 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">stand, sit, stretch, and stride in all directions along the multi-colored canopy tents<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y18 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">that line the hill overlooking the meadow. You can feel the competition, and you<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y19 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">know this is your last chance to put in a good run, to beat that guy you\u2019ve been<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y1a pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">battling all season, to cash in on every training day you\u2019ve put in on the road, the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y1b pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">track, and the trails. Most of the SPARTANS are quite familiar with the Golden<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y1c pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Gate Park course: the start through Lindley Meadow, down Martin Luther King<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y1d pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Drive, across the grass field, up the little single-track hill to the Polo grounds,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y1e pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">then up the wide, Eucalyptus canopied trail, and finally back down to Lindley<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y1f pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Meadow. And that familiarity may have been the problem for some.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x4 pg-1h3 pg-1y20 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">SPARTAN lore is filled with stories of SPARTANS going off course. Even<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y21 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">the great \u201chalf-inch spikes\u201d Charles faltered at Folsom and was tagged with a<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y22 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">DNF. And who can forget the Championship race when Brian and Pat were<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y23 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">chatting on the bleachers lacing their shoes when the starting gun went off. Now<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y24 pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">add this race to the SPARTAN history of missteps. First there was Sal who missed the turn up the hill on the second loop and started running down Lindley Meadow heading for the Pacific Ocean. I was trailing and saw Sal\u2019s error. I immediately started yelling for Sal to come back. I felt like the little kid in \u201cShane\u201d trying to keep Alan Ladd from riding away: \u201cSal! Sal! Come back Sal.\u201d Sal finally heard me and corrected his error, but probably added 100 meters to his run. Lino and Art also had tired moments of confusion, but perhaps I set a new low-bar standard being the first SPARTAN to receive \u201cYou\u2019ve been DQed\u201d email from the PA\/USA governing body. The problem was<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x0 pg-1h3 pg-1y2d pg-1ff2 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">the new 8K cour<span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">s<\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">e<\/span> <span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">f<\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">o<\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">r <\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">t<\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">h<\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">e<\/span> <span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">6<\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">0<\/span><span class=\"pg-1fc1 pg-1sc0\">+ So instead of going down the hill into the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h2 pg-2y3 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">meadow for a second loop, I followed the flow of runners who were lapping me<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h2 pg-2y4 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">up the Eucalyptus canopied hill and down to the finish\u2014cutting more than a mile<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h2 pg-2y5 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">off the course.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h2 pg-2y5 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">Don\u2019t be proud.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x2 pg-2h2 pg-2y6 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">Perhaps it\u2019s an age handicap as Brian and Don had no problems, but they<\/div>\n<div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h2 pg-2y7 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">agreed that the course was not well monitored.
